Expedition Overview:
This 4-day, 3-night overlander tour, meticulously planned from the details provided by Mwakazi Adventures, takes you on a rugged but incredibly fulfilling journey through Tanzania’s cultural and natural wonders. Traveling in a custom-fitted 4×4 overland truck ensures you’re prepared for all terrains, from Arusha’s city streets to the dusty plains of Lake Eyasi.
Day 1: Departure from Nairobi to Arusha
Morning (Approx. 6:30 AM): Your adventure begins in Nairobi, where you will meet your fellow travelers and the Mwakazi Adventures team. After a thorough briefing and a chance to meet your professional guide and photography team, your custom-fitted 4×4 overlander truck will start its engines. You’ll depart Nairobi, heading south towards the Namanga border post, with stunning views of the Great Rift Valley accompanying you on the way.
Midday: Cross the Namanga border into Tanzania. After the necessary border procedures (visa-on-arrival is common, but it’s best to check requirements for your nationality beforehand), the journey continues to Arusha.
Afternoon: Arrive in Arusha and check into your accommodation (the first of your three nights included in Arusha). Take some time to freshen up before your first excursion: the Arusha City Tour. This guided tour will introduce you to the city’s vibrant markets, museums, and historical landmarks.
Evening: Enjoy dinner at your accommodation, which is included as part of your half-board meal plan. The evening is yours to relax, connect with your group, and rest up for a big day ahead.
Day 2: Culture and Natural Beauty
Morning (Very Early): A long but exciting day lies ahead. Rise early for breakfast and load into the overland truck for a journey to the remote shores of Lake Eyasi. Your main destination is a truly immersive Hadzabe Tribe visit. This is a highlight of the trip, a unique opportunity to spend time with one of the last remaining hunter-gatherer societies in the world. You will learn about their traditional bushcraft, tracking, and perhaps even participate in a mock hunting demonstration with their skilled guides using bows and arrows.
Midday: Enjoy your packed lunch (this is an exclusion on the tour, so you will need to pay for this out of pocket).
Afternoon: Continue your cultural immersion with a brief stop to meet the Datoga tribe, traditional blacksmiths. Then, make your way to the stunning Kikuletwa Hot springs (also known as Chemka Hot Springs). This geothermal oasis with crystal-clear turquoise waters, surrounded by lush palm trees, is the perfect place to swim and relax.
Evening: Return to Arusha in the evening for dinner (included on your half-board plan). Spend time exchanging stories from your day and reviewing some of the photos taken by the professional photography team.
Day 3: Nature, Waterfalls, and Water Views
Morning: Following breakfast, the overland truck takes you to the serene Lake Duluti. Here, you’ll enjoy a scenic and peaceful Lake Duluti sunset Boat ride (which will happen later in the day, but you’ll get a good view of the lake first).
Midday: Travel to the Mt Meru eco camp, where your Mt Meru eco camp entrance fee is included. After a chance to explore, choose your own adventure: You can opt for Quadbike riding at Meru eco camp (this is an optional activity and an exclusion, requiring additional payment), or you can join a guided nature walk to see the diverse flora and fauna of the eco-camp.
Afternoon: A short and picturesque hike will take you to the Napururu water falls visit. This majestic waterfall is nestled in a lush green forest; it’s a great spot for taking photos and enjoying the cool mist.
Evening: The grand finale to your sightseeing is the scheduled Lake Duluti sunset Boat ride. Experience the tranquility of the lake as the sun dips below the horizon, casting incredible colors across the water. Your day concludes back at your accommodation for your final included dinner.
Day 4: Farewell to Arusha and Return to Nairobi
Morning: Savor your final breakfast in Arusha at your accommodation. The morning is yours for packing up and perhaps a final spot of souvenir shopping.
Late Morning: Gather at a designated meeting point to bid farewell to Arusha. Your Mwakazi Adventures team will help load your gear back into the 4×4 overland truck. The return journey begins, retracing the road towards the Namanga border.
Afternoon: Complete the border formalities at Namanga, taking a moment to appreciate the view of Mount Meru and Kilimanjaro if they are visible. Your journey back to Nairobi continues through the rolling landscape.
Late Afternoon/Early Evening (Approx. 6:00 PM): The overlander will arrive back in Nairobi, where you will say goodbye to your guides and new friends. This concludes your unforgettable journey to the heart of Tanzanian culture and nature.
